Now this is completely new to me and worth noting down.
Both me and xinux tried to access Cave of Wonders but could not find the entrance while having your gm buffs slowly running out.

This guy talks a short moment about this feature

TLDR: Your awareness level dictates if you can see and enter a dungeon

Never knew or noticed it before. Plus, I showed Xinux where Cave of Wonders was on sunset day! Come on Xinux!

That's a pretty neat idea actually. Didn't watch the video, but technically speaking it shouldn't be a difficult feature to implement. I suspect it could be fully scripted as an NPC interaction based on your skill level.

During beta through early launch, the awareness skill was used for quite a few skill checks. I think it got broken/nerfed around the same time equipment experience was removed. The cap was lowered and it hasn't worked the same since. In the early days, you couldn't see an invisible mob *at all* if your awareness wasn't high enough, until it attacked you. There were plenty of those "hidden entrances" throughout the world that you could walk right by without realizing anything was even there.

After the nerf, some of those entrances were completely unblocked, while others were left covered with interactive rocks that highlighted/responded to a mouseover, but nothing else. IIRC, some of those rocks could still be seen in the Shidreth Mine (panther mask quest area). If you squeezed between the rocks just right, you could see passages populated with mobs behind those rocks, but nothing would get you past them. You could even pull mobs from those passages if you positioned yourself right. As for invisible mobs, they were never completely invisible after the nerf, no matter how low your awareness skill.

There were plans for other awareness skill checks, like trap detection, etc., but most never made it in game or were broken around launch.

How very interesting.

I know I sometimes would enter the opening behind the elite dragoons in Phankor Zhi to only find a cave'y area there, and another time I would find a town. To this day I still don't know if there were actually two different openings and I was very blind. This just opened my mind for a second alternative. How very cool.

There's an empty cave'y area with dragon eggs and whatnot where the elite dragons are. Slightly down the hill there is an entrance to Phankor Zhi (the city). If that's what you are referring to, I'm not sure.

Interestingly enough, all those interactive rocks are missing in the emulator. I can finally see behind them, and ooh, ahh, the crowd goes mild...
