IRC Dev Meeting: Jan 3-4, 2015 End-of-Year Recap

Post by John Adams » Thu Jan 01, 2015 4:32 pm

All,

We're going to make an attempt to get people from all over the planet to meet online at the same time. We have an amazing team working on VGOEmulator, so we're going to recap our first year in development to see where we're at and plan the road ahead for 2015.

Anyone is welcome to join us on irc.vgoemulator.net/#VGOEmu, though we do ask that you hold any questions or input until the end so the dev team can get their agenda completed before the Euro's have to take a nap.

Time (PST):
Sat Jan 3/Sun Jan 4, we're trying for between 8am and 2pm for Devs, and for Content we can do Sun evenings. Either way, everyone will get heard from and spoken to, so even if you cannot sit on IRC, you will be included.

Place:
irc.vgoemulator.net/#VGOEmu

(Rough) Agenda:
2014 Accomplishments (15 mins)
Login, World, Tools, Collected Data, populated, usable gamescape
Learning not only MMO design, but how to work collaboratively across the globe
Communication - most are great communicators; those that aren't are simply not available

ProjMan Items (45 mins)
Why Project Management (tracking) is important --
0.1	- Go over open tasks, update or estimate completion
0.2	- Current cycle; where are we?
		7 - Volt
		6 - Lokked
		4 - Xinux
		4 - Faux
3 - Xen (someone should adopt these)
		3 - zippyzee
		2 - Blackstorm
		2 - John Adams
		2 - Ratief
		1 - Jimbo
0.3 Planning - Based on where we're at with 0.2, we will start planning 0.3 soon
		What are your ideas?
	0.4 Q3 of 2015
	0.5 Q4 of 2015
The goal of 0.5 is to have at least 75% of the game emulated
	The Road Ahead:
That gives us 0.6 and 0.7 to finish all systems for Beta Testing
0.8 will be "Beta", which will be 100% major functionality (2016)
		0.9 Tweaks and bug fixes
		1.0 Release, we're done (2016)
	* The reason for the rush is we may not have much of a Beta if all players lose interest

Bug Tracker (15 mins)
Need functionality for Worlds to xmit bug reports to Login's database in 15 min intervals
Admins can opt-out of sending us their world data/stats
We just want it for iPVP (server vs server) and to emulate the original VGPlayers.com
	Review open bugs:
35 open bugs, this is bad for us having hardly any functionality
Need all team members to be more diligent with the bugs
It's okay to dismiss Not Implemented, Fixed in Dev, or Not a Bug bugs - just
			don't leave them Open

Tools (15 mins)
C++ and C# Parses - where are we?
Re-parse all things one (last?) time before content design begins
DB Patcher - really, really, REALLY need this...
DB Editor - John give an update
"<@Ratief> So far I have found that editor pretty useless as I can't edit much."
Content Design - Where are we, and what's taking so long? (this could be it's own topic)
Data Integrity, Tools (Editor), Processes, Training
VGOPlayers.com - Could use some work on the Portal

2015 Goals[/url] (30 mins)
	Stability, stability, stability!
	VGOEmu 0.3 Planning: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1109
	Even Better Communication -
Code Standards - Design together so code looks more uniform; no more one-man-bands
Documentation - Code commands (mandatory), Forum discussions with whole team about
			implementation design, development and completion
Active Code Reviews - Every commit should be looked over by more than JA
Open Source the rest of the project
Login, Parsers, pending Patcher - Is it time?
	75%+ functioning world, including:
Combat, Diplomacy, Crafting, Guilds, Groups, Harvesting, ???
	Content (FFS)!!!
		Requires tools, documentation, "A Plan"

Q&A / Open Forum
Anything you'd like to discuss that is NOT on this agenda, let me know before Sat/Sun. Thanks, and see you online.

John, I think you should send out a PM so everyone gets notice. Also, are we talking in est or pst for the times?

Hmm not to be difficult but I am trying to plan around a few RL things so I can make this and I do not know what time specifically to be in the IRC chat in Australian +11 GMT time.

So I do not know if I will be able to make it without a set time to reference from for Content Designers to attend.

Is it possible to get a time or is it to spread out for everyone to be able to narrow it down?

I agree with Cyrcle, a copy/paste PM with times and basic info may be best to get the most numbers to attend. Thanks for putting together the rough agenda John

I do have times posted, PST. It's not exact anyway, since it's not a rigid, mandatory meeting or anything It's basically a time we >know< we will all be online to discuss work-in-progress and TODOs. Chat logs will be posted, so you won't miss anything even if you cannot be online.

Thanks John, sorry I missed seeing the PST, it works out as 3am to 9am for me and unfortunately I have an early start and will miss it but I will definitely read through the notes/meeting minutes once posted to catch up and be able to join in/contribute.

Thanks for the clarification, I should of waited until my coffee kicked in then read it again!

No problem Kilsin, in that case if there's anything you want us to bring up, either post it here or PM me and I'll slip it into the agenda.

Just a reminder, due to the restrictions on the private IRC channels, we'll meet up on #VGOEmu - the public channel.

I'm up. Freezing my butt off. Sipping coffee. Awaiting Europe to show up

Day 1 of our epic Dev Summit is over. Thanks to all who attended. Hopefully I'll catch the others online tomorrow and go over the Agenda and today's chat logs with them, adding Day 2 as well.

For now, I need a nap.
