Jabantiz was good enough to have a bad connection to me today and revealed an interesting scenario. He got dropped from IRC, and according to the world console, was disconnected from the WorldServer as well - though his client is still in-game, just non-responsive. when jab forced his client closed, mine disconnected as well. but only 1, the 2nd one I have running is still in the world.

I was also connected to EQ2 beta at the time and had no hiccup in connection there. Also after this happened I had a high ping (2k) to the server but it was stable.

Been watching Jabantiz disconnect all afternoon, randomly. We're literally standing next to each other in Tawar Galan, chatting. Say and /3. He just crashes out. The last one was dramatic to the console:

Okay, one last thing about today's testing and weird connections... I closed my client (abruptly, as always) at just before 6pm AZ time. It is now 6:30pm and I just saw a debug message for "Saving character data for John Adams" go by.

Doing a "characters" from console shows only 3 active chunks, and the one I was supposedly in (Ca'Brael) is not one of them.

Lastly, the Server Info for New Telon shows 1 "is_online" character, when there is clearly 4 according to World (even though it's really only 3).

Had some random disconnects this morning - one was right after I issued the command /afk in Khal . Another was when I was in Tanvu - just moving. Each time I was kicked back to login screen.

This is similar to a problem I had with a mate trying to connect to my server a few weeks ago - where I was receiving opcode packets that could not be deciphered - there is code in the server that just disconnects a user if it cannot decipher an Opcode correctly - maybe we could jyst flag as an error - but not disconnect the user

The drop off you mentioned on IRC at 7:00pm AZ time (5 mins ago) was me restarting the server. There were some orphaned connections online, and wanted to put the /bug code in for public testing.

Just to try and add more details, I ran around for maybe 30 mins before this started to happen with no issues, when I finally stopped and just stood there and chatted or left the client open in the back ground is when the random disconnects started dropping me to character select. I was logged into EQ2 beta at the same time after a few disconnects I closed EQ2 but it continued to happen.

I ran to another chunk and being booted to character select stopped, however I was loosing connection to the world server but keeping my chunk server connection. If I ran to another chunk I would get the world connection back, but when I would let the client idle is when I would loose the world connection again.

This, here, tells me that we get duplicate packets in other circumstances than during OP_ClientAuthConfirm.
My working theory is that the client does this when the server isn't communicating fast enough, and that the server now handles this correctly by filtering out the duplicates. But it is a theory and need to be checked. John can you please remove the comments from this line in UDPServer.cpp (possibly line 956):

Next time we will be able to read in the console (but it will not be stored in the logfile ) what the duplicate packet was. Hm, should fix so the DumpBytes can use the log system to get the info stored in the log file and not only shown in the console.
