Sounds like a faulty switch or a faulty HBA on your DNS server. And an easily tested with a back-up switch and/or HBA Is your AD/DNS a guest on one of your hosts?

When I do a search just within Amazon for BX80614X5650, the various listings also display the wide swings in price too. Could be some misunderstanding and/or inaccurate descriptions on the cheap ones.

I run three PE 2950 dual quads with 64GB in each. with 2 using MD3000 for storage. However, The MD is up for replacement soon:)

Yep... I always had performance issues with the "affordable" hosting services. Have you taken a look at Microsoft Azure? They may have a better balance of cost-to-performance.

I too crossed several chunks and sat idle for over 10 minutes with others logged in. No server crash, however, the client at one point locked up once but was able to get back into the game. Also, the world chat channel and /who command stopped working at one point. It did look like two characters ...
