Learned abilities

I have been watching this project form a distance for a while, and I wish I had time to help out, but I really do not. I just wanted to drop a line in here to hope someone would have time to make sure something wasn't missed when they are out parsing all that Vanguard has to offer. Learned Abilities. The skills you learn from mobs. Can someone make sure the packets are parsed for that? I know my two mains over the years were a Paladin and a Bard and they both had abilities they learned off of mobs before they could use them.

I hope to be playing a Vanguard emulator in the future and thought this was a cool feature that I would hope wouldn't be lost by not being able to be parsed.

rottstein, are these learned via chatting with an NPC? Or something you glean from them while fighting them? Is there a list somewhere? And is it tied to some player attribute (like Perception)? Good call, and thanks in advance for more information.

They are kind of a unique thing.

When fighting a very specific name of mob, as you progress fighting one or more of them you begin to learn a new ability. You will see a message displayed on the screen that says something like "You begin to learn a new skill..." or something to that effect.

There are a number of these "learned" abilities spread over many levels, for many classes.

And yes there are documented lists, somewhere, out there.

It is like Zingtastic said. You fight a particular mob for a while and you get a message that you begin to learn a skill. Im pretty sure i never got more than one advancement of the learning from a single mob. After the first time you get the message Your knowledge of skill xxx has advanced until you learn it fully. It takes about 7 - 10 times to learn it. I "believe" the mobs use the skill and you learn it, thats why only certain ones advance it.

I found this for bard:

Skill: Fox Overtakes the Hare I
Level: 30
Location: Vol Tuniel,Coterie Infenium Sanctuary
Mobs that provide update: Rotblood Stalkers and Enforcers, Infinium Elders, Patriarchs and Scholars

Skill: Fox Overtakes the Hare II
Level: ?
Location: Jathred's Twist
Mobs that provide update: Mercenary Footpads

Skill: Fox Overtakes the Hare III
Level: 50
Location: Rahz Inkur
Mobs that provide update: Zull Efreeti Trader and Zull Efreeti Merchant

There appears to be at least one line of skills for each class. I noticed the DK had a second one learned form a boos? in Heg? There may be several, but once there is a parse of how the skill learning looks it can be implemented according to peoples memories if a true parse for each one can't be found.

I have uploaded a collect with my Bird Shaman in Greystone, doing quests/kill trash that learned an ability over a number of kills, John, if you want to check it out.

Character name was Phlaps.

Yup, each class had a skill to learn , 3 Tiers each IIRC, I know on my dread it was the Humanoids in CIS up top that was T1, Cull, then Greystone for Cull 2 from the Risen tagged mobs, and Rhaz Inkur for cull 3 from Champions, They had to use the skill on you for it to proc a learn %, so killing dident do it, tanking did, but some mobs only use there abilities at certain % health etc. I remember some classes had a few different places they could learn the First tier of their learned abilities, as well.

I still have notes on learned skills for a couple of my favortie classes:

Ranger
Wind Talisman - Lvl 36 - Dargun's Tomb - Learned from Burning Eyes Patrollers, Scouts, and Captains.
Respite - Lvl 46 - Flordiel - Learned from Savage Tree Wayfarer, Savage Tree Warden (humans).
Feral Strike - Level 46 - Rahz Inkur - Learned from Zull Efreeti Tamer

Rogue
Death Whirl I - Lvl 36 - Graystone - Learned from Graystone Spellbreaker (could also learn in Rakasha Citadel, but don't have mob name)
Death Whirl II - Lvl 46 - Rahz Inkur - Learned from Efreeti Gladiator

In order to learn the skill, the mob had to use the skill *on you* while attacking you specifically. That meant rangers and rogues needed to have and hold aggro, so they would be the mob's target when the skill was used.

**The need for having aggro was supposedly removed and changed to only require being in the group that had the mob engaged, but I only ever saw it work if the student tanked the teacher.

I also have the descriptions for each of these skills, if needed.

I know this was a common misconception, but not all of those had to be tanked by the player. I'm not sure if some did or some didn't, or if something got broken down the line, but I know Death Whirl did not require a rogue to tank. And some of my other toons learned stuff without tanking either.

This could however be because death whirl is an AOE, I'm not sure if I was still getting hit by it when I learned it.
