Crowd Funding?

Crowd Funding?
Just a thought, but since you all are SO talented and dedicated... you should crowd source a New Telon from the ground up, new engine, new game... made in the vision we all have...
Just a thought.
Just a thought.
Re: Crowd Funding?
Someone asked something similar: Why not just make your own game?
Myself, I would not be successful or see that project to the end, and the reason is the visual aspect of 3D games. I hate modeling, creating terrain, animations, movement, collision, any of that stuff. I'm in a perfect place on the server end, because I don't have to worry about any of that. AI and Combat Algorithms is what I enjoy.
Dwarf Fortress is probably my favourite game of all time. From a depth and AI perspective, it is unequalled. There is another rogue-like in a similar flavor called Ultima Ratio Regum, currently in development, which envisions a depth of equal, if not greater, of Dwarf Fortress.
I would program games like these, if I had that kind of imagination.

Re: Crowd Funding?
I am sure, if the decision was ever made to remake VG from the ground up, via crowd funding, there would be a need for someone of your talent. Someone to write the servers that would be used.
I am sure you would be able to find other interested bodies willing to take part in a VG rebuild. It was just a thought, I am new here.
Maybe crowd fund the current project to help off set any costs you guys have, or time invested type thing?

Re: Crowd Funding?
I think if any money got involved, that might get the team in trouble with Sony/SOE.

Yup. Not on my watch.
We do not ask for Donations or any other monetary gain, regardless of the slick and slithery way Donation projects dress them up, for two reasons:

- SOE would sue the shit out of me, not you or my team. Me [/*39xqm8to]
- If I took your money, you could now start asking "where is this feature? or that feature? Why aren't you done yet? I gave you $20 two years ago!"[/*39xqm8to][/list39xqm8to]
While you, personally, would probably never do #2, people have, and will. Being open source and hiring slave labor (my dev team) keeps the consumer at bay; it'll get done when it gets done, because we're not getting paid to do it any faster
Re: Crowd Funding?
Question - what about cost of running the servers, bandwidth, hardware, etc? Even some of the EQ emu's take donations, even offer in -game items for people that donate.
Just wondering why SOE's not coming down on them...

Re: Crowd Funding?
So those people who paid a donation to an EQ emu server, when that server admin decides he's 18 now and isn't interested in games anymore, and takes down the server, and pockets $1,000 in donations... what happens?
I've always had a theory on "donation" servers; no offense to any younger folks here, but generally people need community support because they don't have the money to host their own stuff. Teens, starving college kids, etc.
When I first started mmoemulators.com in 2007, I vowed that if I could not "afford" to support my hobby, I simply would not do it. This is why MMOE, EQ2 and VGO now have always been 100% free, because I feel if you can't afford to host a game server, you shouldn't be doing it.
That said, I do not care what anyone else does with our code, as it is open source. If money (or client mods) is involved, they just cannot be affiliated with this project in any way.

To add onto that, it increases the odds for legal issues since you are now earning money for another company's product. Sure in the case of VG the servers are offline, but there is still copyright to it. Why give them another reason to shut you down?
