Welp, it's been a long, long time staring at the original code created by Ramsey back in 2007 or so. I myself have had some success understanding things over the years, but when Xinux (from EQ2Emulator) started analyzing live game packets, things started to really make sense. He has a gift
My little buddy Scatman from EQ2Emulator was never really interested in Vanguard as a game, so for years of me asking him to help me start this project, he was not too interested because EQ2Emu was his first passion. I have since presented the challenge again to him, this time talking about just building the base core for *any* emulator, and his eyes lit up. Which is a good thing, because this guy can code.
So what does this all mean? It means that we're going to make a genuine attempt to build a server core around the VG:SOH game in the hopes it develops into a real emulator someday.
Our language of choice is again C++, and likely LUA when the scripting parts come along and of course a MySQL5 backend. Our code will run on Windows and NIX platforms, both x86 and x64. Standard stuff. Other than that, it's too early to tell.
Granted, development will not be high-paced, because we all have things to do. But we're going to try. Hope you get inspired to join us as well after we lay the initial foundation.
