What is the future of the Reader Store? (Top)

Sony announced in early February that it plans to close Reader Store in the U.S. and Canada on March 20, 2014. Unless a customer chooses to not be included in the transfer process, Reader Store will transfer customers to Toronto-based eReading company Kobo--an admired eBook store and reading community.  We strongly believe that this transition will allow customers to enjoy a continued high-quality e-reading experience.

How will the transfer to Kobo work? Do I need to do anything now? (Top)

No, there is no need to do anything now. Until the Reader Store is closed on March 20, 2014, you can continue to shop at the Reader Store and use your Reader device. In late March, you'll receive an email from Reader Store with instructions on how to transfer to Kobo.

Why should I wait until late March to sign up with Kobo? (Top)

As part of the transfer process, we will send you a link to enable you to transfer your Reader Store library and any Reader Store account credits to a Kobo account. If you do not use this link, your library transfer will not work.

Will I still be able to buy new eBooks for my Reader device? (Top)

You will be able to purchase eBooks from the Reader Store all the way up to March 20, 2014. However, we are no longer offering subscription services. EBooks purchased on the Reader Store up until the Reader Store is closed will be included in the transfer to Kobo. In late March, you will receive an email from Reader Store with instructions on how to transfer to Kobo.

In a few rare cases, eBooks purchased at Reader Store may not be available at Kobo. In this case it is recommended that you download a copy of these titles from Reader Store before April 30, 2014.

Will I still be able to re-download my previous purchases? (Top)

Yes. Whether or not you transfer to Kobo, you can download eBooks you previously purchased at Reader Store until April 30, 2014. However, if you transfer your eBook library to Kobo via the transfer link, you will continue to have access to your eBooks after this date.

In a few rare cases, eBooks purchased at Reader Store may not be available at Kobo for re-download. In these situations, it is recommended that you download a copy of these titles from Reader Store before April 30, 2014.

What will happen to my wishlist at Reader Store? (Top)

Your wishlist will no longer be available after March 20, 2014. Please make a note of your wishlist items prior to this date.

What will happen to my highlights and mark-ups in my eBooks from Reader Store? (Top)

Highlights, bookmarks and annotations you made in your Reader Store eBooks will not be available after you transfer your library to Kobo. You can create new notes, highlights and bookmarks in the Kobo reading experience.

What happens to my credit balance at Reader Store? (Top)

You can still use any credits you might have on your Reader Store account for purchases at Reader Store until March 20, 2014. If you transfer to Kobo before May 31, 2014, your unused credits will transfer with you, and you will be able to use your credits for future purchases at the Kobo Store.

I have an unredeemed gift card purchased from a retail location - what happens to the balance on that card? (Top)

You can still redeem your gift card at Reader Store and use the credits for purchases at Reader Store until March 20, 2014.

I subscribe to newspapers and/or magazines from Reader Store - what happens to those subscriptions? (Top)

We are ending our subscription service and are cancelling all subscription renewals. You can still re-download available editions you purchased through April 30, 2014.   Your magazines and newspapers will not transfer to Kobo.

Do I need to do anything to cancel my Reader Store account? (Top)

No, you will not have to cancel your Reader Store account. Your Reader Store account will automatically be terminated after Reader Store closes.

What happens to any pre-ordered eBooks I have yet to receive? (Top)

All pending pre-orders for eBooks expected to publish before March 20, 2014 will be fulfilled. However, we will cancel any pending pre-orders for eBooks expected to publish after March 20, 2014, and you will not be charged for these orders. Pre-orders will not transfer to Kobo. You will be able to submit pre-orders for eBooks at the Kobo Store.

What will be shared with Kobo? (Top)

Unless you choose to opt out of the transfer process, Reader Store  will share your email address, the eBooks you purchased at Reader Store, as well as the amount of any credit in your account as of March 20, 2014. This will ensure that after you transfer to Kobo, you will have access to both your library of eBooks purchased at Reader Store as well as your credit balance.

If you choose not to transfer to Kobo and want to opt out of the transfer process, please log in to your Reader Store account, click on My Account and follow the opt-out instructions before March 20, 2014. You can also get there directly by clicking here .

Please be aware that by opting out, you will not be able to access your Reader Store library under a Kobo account in the future. After April 30, 2014, you will not be able to re-download any eBooks or periodicals from Reader Store.

What are the benefits of transferring to Kobo? (Top)

Transferring your account to Kobo means that you will continue to have access to both your library of eBooks purchased at Reader Store as well as any remaining credit balance with Reader Store under your new or existing Kobo account. You will also benefit from accessing Kobo’s catalog of more than 4-million eBooks, magazines, graphic novels, and kids’ titles.

In late May 2014, Kobo will launch a version of its eBook Store that you will be able to access directly from your Wi-Fi Readers (PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3) .

What happens to the Reader app on my desktop, Android or iOS device? (Top)

You can continue to use Reader for PC/Mac® to manage and read your eBooks from Reader Store. In late March, we will also release an update to this software that will enable you to directly connect to the Kobo Store for future purchases.

You can continue to use Reader for Android™ Phone & Tablet to read your eBooks from Reader Store. You will also be able to continue purchasing new titles from Reader Store through the app until March 20, 2014. We encourage you to start using Kobo’s Android app after the transfer to Kobo.

You can continue to use Reader for iPhone® & iPad® to read your eBooks from Reader Store. If you transfer your library to Kobo, we encourage you to start using Kobo’s apps for iPhone and iPad after the transfer.

Can I continue to use my Reader from Sony? (Top)

Yes. You can continue to use your Reader from Sony to store and read your eBooks that you purchased from Reader Store as well as for any other compatible documents.

In late March, we will also release an update to the Reader for PC/Mac® software that will enable you to directly connect to the Kobo Store for future purchases. You can use the software then to also transfer new titles via USB to any of your Reader models from Sony .

In late May 2014, Kobo will launch a version of its eBook Store that you will be able to access directly from your Wi-Fi Reader (PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3) from Sony .
