Outfitter advice

I am a level 18 monk with level 17 Outfitter (if I'm saying that right). I quit the game a few years back and have started it up again a couple weeks ago and I'm astounded at how HARD crafting is. I think that may have been the reason I abandoned the game so long ago.

I have a stack of Ratty Leather that I've made into strange names: stuff like Sentry, Defender etc. When I try to turn it into say a Ratty Leather Chest "Segment" nine times out of ten I LOSE everything because my progress is so hideous. I kept track of my attempts, and with every move at the Outfitter table I get a "poor" with 3% to 6% progression (and by "every move" I am not exaggerating - it is that bad). By the time I'm adding my attunement dust I've used up all 2000 of my points and lose my stack of leather and everything else I've committed to the project. Much of this is due to me getting a - what's it called, complication? on every 2nd or 3rd move I make. All of my attributes in crafting are over 170.

So is Outfitting really that hard? I mean, these recipes that I've been attempting I learned back before I quit the game (I was level 11 then, I think) so I would think that by now they should be trivial enough to complete without using 2000 points to go 10%. Or am I doing something wrong?

Add: I've tried to do the work orders, most of which I can complete, but with the rewards being from 13 to 19 copper I really don't find it worth my time.

With the double experience in effect you will find it impossible to max your skills until you are well over twenty. Doing low blue work orders that give little xp will be the fastest way to get your skills up. Unfortunately turning xp off doesn't work for crafting. I recently leveled my warrior in weaponsmithing and he couldn't make a low T2 weapon until he was twenty something.

Thank you for your reply. I've seen the option to turn off XP gain. What does that do?

Also is it true that doing crafting work orders in outposts gets better results (rewards wise) than doing it in cities?

"Turn off XP" only works for adventuring afik. It was added after the game went F2P and subscribers received a 50% bonus. It will help when you want to finish a quest line, chunk or dungeon etc. before you out level it or maybe you want to wait for friends to catch up.
For info on outposts, work order and lots of other stuff see the wikia. It's not totally up to date but lots of useful info there.

Thank you - I've been doing WO in the Refugee Camp southwest of Khal and have gotten to 19...didn't take much.

One thing I'm confused about is when I go to buy/learn new recipes from the Outfitter Trainer in Khal at the Crafter's Forum, all the recipes are red and say stuff like (level 10) after it. What exactly has to be level 10 before I can learn that recipe? My Outfitting is 19 but I still can't learn level 10 recipes.

At level 11 you are required to do a "specialization" quest, in your case to chose between tailor and leatherworker. After that you need to do the "continental tier quests" before you can get the next tiers recipes. Be aware that the novice quests are broken and you will need to petition to get recipes from continents other that your home. I have seen petitions take up to 48 hrs.
    Good luck.

Thank you Billham. I appreciate your information. I did the Leatherworker specialization and it looks like I need to be at 21 before I can do the next one in Aghram.
