Silenced!

Tell me about dealing with silence. Other than "play a disciple," what's a healer to do? Can it be avoided in the first place? Any way to cure it once it's applied? Would Purging Flame or the bloodmage autocure symbiote thingy help? (For that matter, in terms of curing in general, how do I know what's flagged as a poison or disease, as opposed to a curse or a none-of-the-above?)

Currently it seems like all I can do is just wait for silence to wear off and hope everyone survives, which seems ridiculous so I assume I'm missing something.

In most fights, the silence is pretty short but in the ones where it is longer it is often got from the mob having a frontal ability and being behind - or if its an aoe - at distance can help.

A little more incite to what you are fighting would be helpful. Things that are diseases, poisons, or curses will generally say so in the description. "Major Disease: blah blah. Bores you to death dealing blah blah blah" I would assume if a silenec is part of any of the above you would be able to cure it. Assuming you are not trying to cast on yourself when silenced.

The major way to approach silencing is avoid it (Line of Sight usually) or deal with it (aka let it wear off).

Edit: Or as Krolk said distance is usually a factor as well. Mot mobs have cast range. Be outside that range and it won't hit you.

I only ran into being silenced once so far with my Paladin, and I died because I couldn't heal myself. It sucked, but it was kind of cool because it made those mobs more challenging.

I tried to come back and died again, so I just decided I would come back in a few levels and squish them. ;) (or come back with friends!)

The only real way to deal with stuns and silence is to try to gauge the rhythm of those attacks and HoT/shield right before it goes off. I have a 55 druid that was killed by the 20s in Hillsbury just because of those mechanics. There's not really anything you can do once it hits. Some stuns can be broken by taking more damage from that mob, requiring the tank to move it.

As others stated, positioning is usually what to do to avoid it in the first place. 16m range will keep you out of a lot of stuff. This may actually make you...move around. Simple example cleric stands 16m out, casts a bunch of stuff, runs in to smash the target to gain some energy, moves back out. Other spells like Shaman Renewal or Blood Mage crit have shorter range so you'd need to move to cast those.

Thanks to everyone who provided information.

In the particular situation I most recently encountered, positioning won't really work--a shaman and sorcerer duo doesn't have a lot of options as far as that goes; the only way to avoid the silence on my shaman is to make the sorcerer tank it would seem. But I have gotten some good general information on silence, so thanks again.
