The Psionicist

Alright, so since I've hit a wall (short of time for groups) I've gone and rerolled my Psi. Actually I just deleted a lvl 35 Psi and made a lvl 1 Psi (I like the levelling i nthe game and the progression through abilities is fun). Now, it's been 5, almost 6 years, since I've played a Psi. I easily got acquainted to the CCs, DoTs, etc. Are there any tips and tricks out there? I remember the ease of soloability from before which is what led me to recreate this character.

Also I was wondering if there were any suggestions on stat spreads? I know int and wis but should the rest of my points go into con? Is vit useful at all?

    Thanks guys.

I have kept my Psionicist (Thalatth) with Intelligence, Wisdom and then Vitality. Her "life" has been 95% soloed and 5% partnered (with a Necromancer), so I primarily kite, therefore once the Simularcrum is disbelieved and the beast starts to come towards me having a few more hit points is always a wonderful thing! :)

I tend not to charm unless I end up with multiple mobs, but Time Trick is very handy for that as well if you don't care for multi-target kiting or keeping a charm up. I stay in Phrenic Rage at all times. Gestalts, which I am sure that you are aware having had your level 35 Psionicist are wonderful to have.

If you find yourself in need of assistance in getting to the Gestalts, give me a shout and I can help.

Thanks! Yea, seems 1-10 is rather bland right now with few abilities :p I don't remember having a way to break time trick before though, seems the new functionality (if it is, been a while) is really useful :)

Int>Wis>Con. Vit is effectively pointless once you get Thought Thief. Flip to TT and CS and back to Phrenic to pretty much fill your mana pool while lvling.

While lvling (its been a while) i always had good luck with charm kiting and in the mid 50s switched to ae kiting in ToT.

Hi Vedrix...I just did pretty much the same thing...cept I didn't delete my Lvl 34 PSI. :D I found Int>Wid>Vit to be rather good! Vit actually gives you additional on foot movement speed which is great for a squishy kiter. I figured con maybe a bit later...but really no matter how much con you have, you are going to die fast if you get hit.

As a PSI..you should rarely get hit. Also don't underestimate a charm. As a charmed mob is many time more powerful then a mob of the same type I have found. Try charming a mob then sic it onto a mob of the same type and see how much damage the charmed one does compared to the normal mob. I have been able to take down 2 3 dot mobs of my level sequentially with the one charmed 3 dot, before having to recharm it.

That of course is with dots and everything running on the mobs and it is also at low lvl..I am currently lvl 14, so I don't know if that is similar at higher levels.

    Anyways, my 2cents :)

Out of the four caster classes, the psi has one of the least need to put points into Vit. The hp and resist on con outweight the energy regen bonus (despite the effect of Phrenic Rage, psis have numerous energy regen abilities) and the minor movement speed bonus. Vit is primarily a healing stat, most useful for classes with notable healing ability.

    Int matters most, then Wis.

I agree Yeti about Vit being below average for regen...to increase your general runspeed though its great! :) More run speed you have then the easier it is to kite..depends on playstyle I guess.

Get a druid/ranger/wolf shaman buff, 100 vit isnt enough of a runspeed buff to make any noticeable difference when kiting.

Not really a playstyle choice, just an over estimation of the benefits of vit. (Sorry to be a jerk about it)

I feel that it comes down to personal play preference. I stand by my decision to chose Vitality over Constitution on both my Psi and my Blood Mage. WIth my Psi in particular, as with the vast majority of my 12 gals, she is solo'ed. Thalatth just hit 51 recently and of that time at least 80-90% of her time has been solo'ed due to when and why she was created and then my current situation of being a single mom. Trying to group and having very frequent afks is not fair, in my opinion, to my groupmate(s), so I solo. As I play Thalatth, I kite, I will charm or time trick if I need to so as to balance out what I am doing, especially when dealing with two 4 dots at a time having one pet along side the Sim is a nice benefit, but being that I can kite the way I like with multiple mobs and manage to keep the mana that I need, be able to stay away enough so that the mobs do not touch me and not have to stance dance during, that is my play preference...

So Vedrix, I would simply suggest that you decide how you feel best to play your character and what play style best suits your personal needs and interests.

I know that this thread is a little aged, so you may have already recreated and have been progressing with your Psi, but I wish you the best with it.

You forgot about +40% run buff that is instantly cast and lasts for 1 minute, with 2 minute recast or so. With that one I didn't feel I need any VIT to kite a bit easier. So CON all the way for me after max INT/WIS.
There are also +10% run bag veteran reward and +20% SC shop bag as well if you're willing to invest cash or get lucky to catch it as "item of the day" sometime :)

It's probably druids who get the largest benefit from +VIT since they often act as healers or sub-healers. At least they have decent self buffs to compensate for hp/resists. PSi don't have that luxury.
At lvl55 raiding I found it is actually good to last 3-4 hits instead of 2-3, to get extra second or two to cast Mass Amnesia or de-aggro.

I am having such a hard time soloing my lvl 18 PSi, I die constantly. Solo all the time basically. With lots of space I can kite, but in closed places I die all the time. I think its Rajin's End where I have some quests lvl 15-16, but they still hit hard on my poor cloth. When 2 mobs close in on me and I have nowhere to go, I either have to cast the time trick of charm, and cast simulacrum. I got this new spell to charm for 3 minutes, but that takes 3 seconds to cast. By then I'm probably dead.
I feel so miserable. But i love the class though and that whats keeping me going. Is there improvement after, say, lvl 20 , in survivability.
Or i need some one on one training from an experienced player
    Help!!
My charname is Dontmindme, dont hesitate to give me a pst

It does improve, but you don't want to get hit. I forget what level but you get some instants that aoe paralyze/stop attacks. The simulacrum is your tank, when you start it off you need to give it a few seconds to build up more hate instead of bombarding that target with damage. Start looking for gear that adds damage and spell damage focus (on the exchange most likely). As a last resort you eventually get a pretty good accelerate spell allowing you to run off, but in terms of a psi actually taking any hits, not going to happen. It's all about control. When time tricked, that target won't take any damage, but you can still snare it...snare so when released you have a better chance of getting simulacrum on it.

Bertie, now I am just an amateur Psi, so others will probably have better advice for you, but one thing I noticed in what you wrote that I can comment on. You mentioned using time trick when two mobs close in on you, but you shouldn't let it get to that point.

The thing that makes the Psi so cool, to me at least, is the way they control the tempo of the fight. They are not reactive--they set the pace. For example, in a tight room, say you have three mobs there--you use time trick immediately on one mob, Simul the second, and charm the third. Send the charmed mob to beat on the Simul one, then help the charmed mob kill it. Recharm the mob if need be, then send it against the time tricked one before you release it, then release it, and help the charmed mob kill it. By that time, the charmed mob should be low on health and not too hard to kill. If there are more than 3 mobs, and no room to kite, maybe that's too much to solo. It would be for me anyway, although others may be able.

Now like I said, there are others far better than me who can help you more, but just remember, as a Psi, YOU are in charge! You make the mobs play your way, and you have the tools to do that. It is an awesome class! Good Luck!

Thanks all for that info. Indeed, yesterday I did manage to team up with a disciple and I did exactly whaty Schiller described. That was in Kegars End. Indeed I set the pace there, mostly by using this wonderful new enthrall on a dot 4 and letting it tear its own people apart. Of course, the disciple was at standby when this 4 dot decided to have a go at me, but i'm having a ball and learning at the same time. You have to like develop reflexes... I tend to use the 1 sec charm now for quick reaction, and then I can enthrall or whatever him without getting too many hits. Hey, I'm not doing too bad for a 50 year old guy!!!

There you go. That's one of the things that keeps my interest in Vanguard--you go through these waves of failure and despair until the light comes on and you get rolling again (assuming you didn't give up). Of course you need all the gestalts; hope I'm not calling the kettle black there. I truly cannot remember names of all abilities and levels and stuff but the aoe stun thing is really a turning point, giving you six or eight seconds to make your choices. Once you have those abilities and some damage bonuses, the class is like cruising around in a limousine watching crowds perish! Very clean, and it makes groups able to go through things they otherwise might not have been able to.

Awesome! Sounds like real fun! And let all those young whipper-snappers look out for us old guys! (I am 52.)

I too am learning my PSI too(just 14 atm). One spell i'm using a lot is my first AOE that stuns for 8 seconds within 10 meters. Remember those dots keep ticking while that creature is stunned. It's a great way to end the fight.
  18. Gott New Member

As a psi, don't neglect the abilities you learn thru gestalts. Thought thief and mass amnesia, for example, are so very handy. At level 24 you can learn mass amnesia, but it's in an oddball place a level 24 would never be near. The ability instantly makes you lose all aggro and takes you out of combat. You will, however, go immediately back into combat if a DOT is on a mob. I made a thread in game play discussion about where to find this gestalt. Perhaps I should have put it in a different section ...
