Disciple Weapons (a quick question)

Discussion in 'Healers' started by ARCHIVED-Gelthidor, Mar 23, 2012.

  1. So I came back to the game 2 days ago, and rolled a disciple, and was wondering if it really matters which weapon type I choose, seeing as IoD starts you out using Martial Swords, and I'm actually enjoying using that weapon type...

So I guess my question is, would I still be good enough using Martial Swords, or would it be better to prepare myself with a 2HB, H2H, etc?

Edit: Also, I know Vit is one of the most important stats for a Disciple, but what secondary stats should I focus on? Kinda hard to tell since my gear seems to go all over the place when it comes to stats :p
  2. Martial swords are rather uncommon off the isle. cis graigwind and greystone set you up for some of the best 2 handers in game, and you should definatly go for em. Crafted striking handwraps make a fair alternative though.
Personally i went str vit dex all the way in that order, from lvl 1 to still using it now. some people prefer to start str vit con though for leveling, this'll give u more health to solo but reduce your crit rate.

Thanks, that helps a lot, luckily, I'm duoing with a Pally, so I don't need as much con, and crit rate is always good :p
  4. For leveling purposes I went STR/DEX/vit as the amount of healing required to solo much of the early game is relatively easy for the disc to keep up with, and you will start recieving healing gear to help keep up with it very quickly.
For raiding Vitality is practicaly a must. Personaly my stat spread is VIT/CON/dex, although I have played around with VIT/STR/dex for easier content.
  5. I'm a level 30 disciple and I've used handwraps/claws for the majority of my levels.
Back at launch I used a blade staff for a while; and, at levels 26-28 I used a blade staff as well as the damage output was greater than my current handwraps at the time.
Since then I've been back to hand wraps.
I'm currently a few steps away from the CiS blade staff and can almost tell by looking at it that I will still prefer my handwraps for the stat bonuses, even though the blade staff will have a higher damage output.

As for stats, I've been doing DEX/STR/VIT. That is, maxing dexterity and strength as often as possible and throwing the rest into vitality. I've found that critical hits are really what throws my DPS off the charts. The added mitigation is also nice.
    I will probably respect to VIT/CON/DEX when I'm 55.
  6. you really dont need the con late game, the mitigation from pota set is more than enough to keep you alive, and even offtank some stuff. str vit should really be the focus in all cases, weather you use dex or con as 3th stat is sort of up for debate, i see absolutely no excuse to leave out str unless u wanna limit urself. edit.
edit: well maybe one reason, if u never hit a mob and go pure direct healing, then get vit wis con

Not really, the Hunters League questline, for example, gives a Martial Sword, and I think there was some legendary Martial Sword around later, maybe Arena ? Not sure. Also raid drops, like from Ataraxis.
Martial Sword, at 28 I usually start fights with my HL Martial Sword, before switching to offensive weapons. Gives you a little buffer to set up your defenses. In groups I switch to them if there are aggro problems.
I am planning to skill Martial Sword, Bladed Staff, and Handwraps on my Disciple. Maybe a 4th weapon if I ever get enough weapon skill points for it. Martial Sword because its the defensive weapon and only option for slashing damage, Bladed Staff because they are the only piercing weapon for Monk/Disciple, and Handwraps because its a Leatherworker and they can only craft Handwraps for weapons.
If I only could have one weapon on my Disc, it would be the Martial Sword ... after all, its supposed to be a healer, not a dps class.

I dont even give my tank classes Con before endgame. Even less my healers. I have skilled my Disc for Vit, Dex, Str right now. Also a bit of Wis, though in retrospect I shouldnt have done that - Disc mana heals are extremely expensive and thus not very useful. For raiding I really dont know, then again I'm not really planning on raiding with my Disc.
  8. Cragwind(30's) and Greystone(40's) are both bladestaffs and I can tell you from using them that their damage is very high. Higher than any 1handers or windblades. I mostly solo'd with mine. With the Cragwind blade and the armor from lower DT I was able to solo the Mayor in PoA when I was 2 levels lower than him.
  9. Don't forget the URT line that gives you a Staff. +8 STR / +8 DEX, 50.00 DPS.
I prefer it over the Martial Sword any day.
  10. For what it's worth, the content actually matters a bit in this question. If you're lower level (less than 48-50ish) you'll do well with any weapon setup really. The DPS difference at younger stages is negligible. The healing bonus of inner light while dual wielding is negligible. Some people can't even parse a difference, let alone notice one. There are however a few things you can do during the lower levels to improve your damage output noticably:
#1: Place some Dex with that Strength. Your ability to critically hit more often will decrease the duration of solo fights in a very real fashion.
#2: Use what god gave you. Knife Hand adds up to some pretty strong damage over the short duration it lasts. As all MMORPG players know, short duration dots are the bees knees.
#3: Don't focus on your vitality too much, or your wisdom at all. Most of your healing will be from Inner Light, which gains a whopping 30 or so points from a max vitality build at end game. It's next to worthless to the younger disciple with the exception of your Lao'Jin Flare line or Kiss of Heaven get out of jail free cards... and those are always strong enough to prevent you from dying unless you really should've FDed the pull to begin with. Spend those points on more strength... more dex... can't spend on more? Okay fine get a little vitality.
Now in the post 50 game things slightly change, as the mob content will dictate weapon viability fairly well (and ditching Vitality isn't really a good idea). In SOD and BOD you're going to want a weapon that pierces as half the elemental bases are weak to it. A bladed staff is much stronger than a pair of handwraps. If you're fighting something with stun potential, you're going to want a two hander to make the most out of each individual hit.
In no cases that I've ever encountered is a Martial Sword a superior weapon to some other form, however. If you would like to sit back on your haunches and heal the main tank while keeping out of range... roll up another healer. If you want to play a disciple, dance the agro line, and surround your group with an aura of protection - ditch the prissy sword and do your group some good.

Strength doesn't contribute to healing output at all. It also does nothing for a disciple's highest dps ability. Why on earth would you make it your primary stat at any point in the game?

Because the vast majority of your time as a disciple you're hitting things. With your fists. Not with a shuriken. Dexterity doesn't contribute to healing output at all either, but I'm guessing that's your main spec point (assuming you mean Ra'Jin Flare as the highest DPS ability).
The reason why come end game Dexterity starts to be less required is you don't need it to constantly crit. You have a force crit ability (one of the better ones in the game in fact, you can easily get three hits as criticals even when dealing with GCD) and even with Dexterity taking a backseat you're going to be critting nearly every other hit (before getting fully raid geared!).
I've personally switched to a more Str Vit Con|Dex build myself and I've seen not only an increase in survivability but my ability to heal is increased as well (not much need for Wis, because with Energy regen between natural and the learned ability, I never run out of the stuff anyway).
  13. As a 33 disciple, I've tried all of the different weapon combinations. When the game was first launched and we were first coming up everyone was raging about 2-h bladestaves. I used these until level 13ish at which point I realized my fists did more damage than most of these 2-h weapons. I used my fists until 20 or so when I quit the game for my first time.
They've obviously changed the fists damage output thing and I realized losing the stats wasn't worth it, and since level 22 I've stuck to claws/handwraps. The damage output on them is very nice, often higher than a staff/sword of the same level, they have better stats, and you can dual weild them.
I've purchased a set of orange crafted wraps and have been using them for many, many levels. I haven't seen a weapon come close to the output that these have for my level.
I've been dumping points into Dex/Str then Vit. Someties I will alternate and throw more into Vit than Str. However, Dexterity is definitely my preferred stat at this level.
  14. I'm also interested in this. I've chosen outfitter for crafting to make my medium armor, and I believe I can also make the handwraps with this skill as well. This is probably the main reason I would chose to go with handwraps, but can we see some stats on crafted staves to compare with crafted handwraps?
  15. -your eyes are thrown across, towards the subsequent post-
  16. Here are level 24 handwraps. It may be sad, but I'm still using these bad boys at level 33 (if anyone can make an upgrade that I can use, please let me know your price--I've seen some level 43 ones on the broker).

I thought I had a crafted martial staff as well, but I may have pitched it. I can't seem to find it.
  17. Personally, I used crafted handwraps up until the Greystone Bladestaff. Then used that up through starting to raid.
Once you start to raid you will have some options for Knuckles, Claws, Martial Staff, Martial Sword, and eventually the best weapon in game for the disc, which has the slot to augment it with your epic aug.

  18. Ever since I found out about it, I've primarily used a crafted staff with the Enfeeble proc on it. On the times when I need a bit more healing, or Enfeeble doesn't work (have seen some mobs as Immune to it) I use one with Healing Focus on it.

Haha. I hadn't actually been in game for a while. Just snapped the screenie for the thread. I do have a tendency to forget to repair though.
