Receive Side Scaling - Edit: Turns out I was wrong.

  1. EDIT: IGNORE THIS!
Turns out I was wrong and premature in assuming this fixed my problem. It was actually the act of changing the parameter which ultimately reset my network adapter and cleared the lag. I logged in today and immediately was into a lag situation. As soon as I changed RSS to enabled, the adapter reset and the lag was gone. I changed RSS to disabled last time and the same thing happened, so I just assumed it was because I disabled it.

I doubt this will help many players, but I was having issues running multiple toons on one of my computers [never happened with a single toon though] I'd often be playing and suddenly be hit with really bad lag on all four toons - my pings would hit 5000+ for a second or two. Meanwhile, my other two computers would be fine . So, I knew it wasn't my connection. Eventually I realized it was my computer as when I started to lag, it also lagged out my web browser and the only way I could fix it was to reboot. After some research I tried a few things and found a fix for my problem (well, preliminary since it's only been a couple of days with success).
This particular computer is a Core 2 Quad and there is a Windows feature called Receive Side Scaling that was enabled. RSS has something to do with using multiple cores when processing packets. Anyway, disabling this feature cleared up my problem immediately. Hopefully it stays that way.
Now I just have to deal with the hitching problems on my main toon. So far, I am trying a Nagling/TCP ACK fix and it SEEMS to have helped me a bit, but it's so hard to know for sure since I can't easily test it. Still lagging/hitching though.
