"Bitter Truths" and the Macken's Bitter Revenge drink... is this working?

  1. Back when I previously used to play Vanguard in 2007, it was Diplomacy that I was really interested in and enjoying. For about three months or so, I ran around doing every quest, picking up all the cards, gaining Presence and Prestige and the rest, as you do. I completed the Exemplar title and it was al going swimmingly. It was keeping me from logging into EverQuest II (which was my game of choice until that time).
I realized I was missing the "Bitter Truths" card, and that I would need it later, as it is a very powerful opening card for parleys, and other diplomats were finding some things easier by having it. So, I started parleying bartenders to try to get it. Ok, no problem.
From time to time, I would get the drink, drink it, and ... nothing. Over a period of days, then weeks, I had about 50 attempts. All ... nothing. I spent about a month doing that!
But it was boring. Not difficult or challenging, it was an easy parley, just a waste of my time. I really wanted this card, but it was not achievable by skill or determination, but simply by doing the same thing for hours on end for days and weeks ... and relying on pure luck. I heard others claimed to have got it, but it never happened for me. I got to dread logging in, because giving up on it and trying to defeat parleys others were saying were better with that card, seemed defeatist, and yet spending yet MORE hours wasted on the same parley was worse than just not logging in.
Eventually I just gave up and went back to EQII.
    .....
I decided last week to come back to Vanguard after 5 years. Feanturi was there, in Ca'ial Brael, at the Bartender, where I had left him five years earlier. Go on then, I said, I'll try again.
In these last 4-5 days, I have parleyed her so many times, my City of Tanvu faction has gone from 1300 to over 12000. I've picked up about another 20 or so Macken's drinks.
And ... nothing. Still nothing. It just seems so pointless to waste endless hours doing the same boring thing for absolutely no progress whatsoever.
Is this thing broken? Does it ever actually work?
If it is not just broken, this is a poorly designed quest. I really needs to have the chance improved over time, so that if you really have parleyed for it 1000+ times and have consumed 50-100+ drinks the chance of getting it does actually start to improve.
  2. Yes it still works, I recently got it on an alt after 45 tries, on my first toon I got it on the 3rd try. As frustrating as it is you just have to keep at it.
  3. Well, another marathon session spent just parleying the bartenders in Ca'ial Brael.
It was enough parleys to raise my base City of Tanvu faction from +13000 to over +18000. Weird given I think Feanturi has visited that city just once ever.
But from all that effort, I earned just six more Macken's drinks. I used them and ... nothing.
So, sick to death (once again) of this stupid quest, I headed to the broker, despite having almost no coin to my name (being a relatively new character, given it's not been played in coming up to 5 years).
I spent half the coin I have on some Macken's Bitter Revenge drinks that were on the broker.
ON the fifteeth one I purchased, it finally gave me the card.
I estimate coming up to close on 100 Macken's drinks to get that bloody card. Given that the drink itself is a rare reward from Bartender parleys, that really is excessively boring.
  4. a while back i got my hands on some.. and, well.. sorry got it second try .. sometimes its just the luck of the roll..
  5. Yeah on my first character a friend gave me a stack of vials, said they'd gone through like 40 of them before they got it. I got mine on the first try. So it's just a dumb luck system, really.
  6. tried to get two toons through the card not too long ago... one died several times but got the card... other toon wasn't so lucky. he lived but no card.
