Im looking to go either DK or pally for a heavy class, but not sure which one will prove more effective dps wise as usually those are m more favorable builds. If its not even close to possible thats fine as well lol. Thanks!

Dps isn't a big factor between the two, the Dk would have more dps in some cases versus a pally cause of the 2 hander verses a 1 hander. But im being honest the dps that tanks do are very low in comparison to classes that are built to Dps. Tanks are not really a dps machine.

I remember a pally just yesterday saying he wasn't taking any damage, but took 11 minutes to kill a mob. Not sure what he was hitting, I remember early 50s on a dk, took 5 minutes to down a golem at PotA, and after levelling a bit, I think it dropped to four minutes. No tank really does damage, but, comparatively, when you look at the use of one single handed weapon versus dual wield, or a two hander plus some spells, you just have to be consoled by the fact that paladins do, some, healing.

Our DK in top 5 parses sometimes. Would be top DPS in casual guild builds tho. But that's really high end...

Tank dps is largely dependent on both the situation, and the power level of the character. A 55 raid geared and skilled tank is going to pump out some serious damage, and will out damage almost anyone that isn't geared at least somewhat similarly.
Before that, however, tanks do tend to be a little lower on the dps charts. A warrior will dps the highest most of the time, and the other two will be fairly comparable depending on the situation. DKs don't get hatred incarnate until level 50, and paladins can't fully utilize a virtue burn until they get all their good burn skills.

I play a warrior though, so I'm not the best for all the Paladin and DK details.

To answer the OP, a DK will normally out damage a Paladin, but it's not really that noticeable in a group setting, as you're talking about a mob dropping in 2 seconds instead of 2.02 seconds. In a typical group/raid setting the three tank classes do between 20%-50% of a true dps, pending burns and fight duration. Shorter fights favor tanks versus actual dps classes. Overall though plate dps is normally pretty sad compared to the classes designed for it.

You have to realize that low-level tanks and end-game tanks are two very different breeds of dog too. At low-to-mid levels, I would put my money on a DK to out damage a Paladin very consistently but like Kamor said, there is very little difference any more at end-game. As far as tanks go, I would put my money on a Warrior to be #1 in DPS at any level, especially if gearing for DPS.

Still, if real DPS with the ability to tank a little in a pinch is what you are looking for, Monk may be your best bet.
